Now that you've decided to put
forth your two cents on the Internet, there are some basic questions that you should be
asking yourself (or of your company) This list is just some summary items to jog
your memory, help you steer clear of some common pitfalls, and guide you down the path ofInternet Solutions
Certainly, the several facets of presenting a bold and new face for the
community has it's confusions, and if you're not familiar with the jargon, a whole new
language to learn.
Therefore, to start, I've got this list of concepts (look in the
sidebar), and you can wander around till you find something comfortable, and take it from
there.
The Who, What, When, Where, How, but most importantly, the Why's of Web
Solutions.
There are 3 kinds of people in this world, those who can count, and
those who can't. If you're the kind of person that knows computers, and can FTP and
can Link your heart out, then welcome. If you know nothing about computers, short of
"I like my microwave, leave me alone", welcome also.
We can handle any part of a web solution, from providing the actual
page, to the server that makes it available, to the search engines that make things sell,
to handling the orders that you'll get from your site.
Knowing what makes up a web site is the first step in determining who's
responsible for them. There are 3 types of people that make a good site work.
- Web Designer. This is the person that decides what
content should be in the page. What is being said, sold, pushed, gawked at, and
determines the overall look and feel of the site. Color schemes, navigation and font
choices are the domain of this person.
- The HTML Author writes pages, uses an HTML editor and
makes the words appear on the page. A good Author can also manipulate graphics to
make them ready for internet consumption.
- A Web Programmer makes the buttons work behind the
scenes. When you click "search" or "buy" or "more
info" or "get some help!", programs behind the scenes (called Server-Sde
Code by geeks) make the bells ring and the gee-gaws tilt. They know languages like
Perl, VB, Java and Javascript. If they know TCP/IP and all that internet 'stuff', so
much the better.
Often, one person tries to take on all 3 roles. If you have never
done any of these, expect some surprises, and stark realities, but also, never forget the
reason you're doing all this!
Back to the Basics
Web Pages consist of several pieces.
 | HTML - HyperText Markup Language, to be exact. Kind of like English, but less
verbose, and not nearly as flexible. BUT, ya gotta know HTML to put stuff on a
WebPage. |
 | Graphics - Each designer has their own software they prefer, but that can take a
picture, maybe scan it in, manipulate it and make it whoosh down to the users browser. |
 | Links - Jumps to other places, either inside your website, or out to others. |
 | Whiz-Bang Doo-dads - fun buttons and spinny things to confuse and otherwise obfuscate
your page. Makes things look pretty. |
 | Sound - need I say more? Songs, redio, sound effects, sound bites, etc. |
 | Movies - Recorded from your cam, our cam, or computer generated. |
Back to the Basics
Well, whenever you're ready. Web Sites are up all the time, so somebody's
computer, yours or ours, will be on and listening for all those web surfers. Surf's
Up! Are you on-line now?
Back to the Basics
Web Pages are hosted on computers called Web Servers. These are generally PC's
that are permanently connected to the Internet, and ready to answer surfing requests.
Web Servers can be anywhere there's a fulltime Internet connection. The bigger
the Internet connection pipe, the better off you'll be. If there's people there that
baby-sit the connection, you'll be (generally) assured that your site is available.
Please not that there are no guarantees of service and availability when it comes to this
space, so do not expect compensation if the down time negatively affects you.
We can help you put a web server at your company's location, where you have complete
and total control, or we can 'rent' you space on our web server that we host.
Wherever the server is, you should have access to your 'logs', the record of all the
visitors and if possible, analysis tools to be able to chart your stellar progress on the
net.
Even if you've already developed a site, it should probably be reviewed, updated, made
more current. When's the last time you looked at your visitor logs? What's
your hit count this week? How many megabytes did you serve up?
Back to the Basics
Well, through the magic of the Internet (fueled mainly by big companies and Uncle Sam)
we can assume that lots and lots of computers will be connected (full time or on-demand)
to this global computer network. The 'vehicles' of the internet run on TCP/IP, and
the messages they carry are email, web surfing HTML, Audio, movies, phone calls, pictures,
tele-conferencing, and cool whix-bang geegaws.
Each computer on the Internet gets an address, and the more important computers even
get an entry in the address book of the Internet - called DNS. Once you have an
entry in the DNS address book, surfers can type "www.packetex.com"
and find your TCP/IP address, and look at your stuff. A company currently called
"Internic" handles that, and you can visit them at www.internic.net.
Once someone has your address, they ring your (web servers) doorbell, and (usually) get
invited in. Sometimes passwords are needed, for some sites are secure and require
payment or membership to get inside. Most of the time, however, web sites are free.
Back to the Basics
Well, that's the big question, and there's no easy answer. Let me rattle
off some of the obvious ones.
 | I've got something to sell - a product or service. |
 | I've got something to say to the general world. |
 | I've got potential customers who need more information |
 | I've got current customers who want to do business. |
 | I've got a group of people who share a common thread, and I want to
provide information just to them. |
 | I went on vacation, and I want to show you my pictures! |
 | I have a camera, and will show you my coffee pot right now! |
Most people now see that the Internet is a huge marketing tool, and that
bringing together buyers and sellers is the name of the game. Expect to see lots of
advertising, and 'let the buyer beware' - there is NO authority on the Internet that
requires truth-in-advertising!

help them solve their problems.
